Why Does My Phone Charger Cable Keep Breaking? Braided vs Plastic
4 min read · 21 October 2026

Phone charging cables usually wear where they bend most: near the connector, in a tight knot, or where they are pulled by the cable instead of the plug. A cable can also fail internally even when the outside still looks tidy.
Braided versus plastic finishes
A braided nylon outer finish can feel more resistant to everyday scuffs and can help a cable feel less slippery in a bag. It is not a promise that the cable will never break. The connector ends, internal wires and the way the cable is used still matter.
Four simple habits that help
Hold the connector rather than yanking the cable out. Avoid sharp bends right at either end. Do not trap it under furniture or roll a chair over it. When packing it, make loose loops instead of a tight knot.
When to replace a cable
Stop using a cable if the connector is loose, the outer layer is badly damaged, it gets unusually hot, or charging cuts in and out. If you think there is a fault with a ChargeUp Co. cable, use our contact form and read the Returns & Warranty page.
For a fresh everyday spare, look at the light green braided USB-C cable or a pack for multiple rooms.
